Adaptation measures

Successful adaptation measures consist of the use of drought and heat tolerant crop varieties. To support these measures, communication of climate change issues and education on the use of short duration varieties is needed. Other helpful adaptation will consist of the development of small scale irrigation facilities and afforestation.

Crop composition: Some varieties of maize and millet have short term duration and are heat tolerant. Research should improve these varieties and Extension should educate farmers in applying them.

Choice of crop varieties: Farmers should be assisted (especially by Extension) to select varieties that are suited to the specific areas; especially in the Sudan Savana.

Growing period: Meteorological Services in Ghana predicts the rainfall patterns for each season in Ghana. Since most farmers do not tune their radio or television sets to listen to these forecasts, Extension can assist in informing the farmers.

Crop management: Crops will benefit from crop rotation and mixed farming by integrating livestock into the cropping systems.
